Spring Breaks, Past and Future

2/10/2017

Hello Everyone,

The time is nearing for our annual spring break trip!  This trip is a mix of community service, club member bonding time, and sightseeing.  In the past, the spring break trip has taken us to places along the west coast such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle.  This year we are considering Seattle again, or perhaps a fun historical town like Astoria, or some place along the Oregon coast.  Please share ideas if you have them!
While we brainstorm, this is a good time for a small recap on last year's Seattle trip.  We opted for less than a full week, so everyone got part of the week to unwind before the start of the next term.  With that in mind, we left Friday of finals week, and returned again the following Tuesday.

In terms of volunteering, we cleaned up a couple parks, helped out at the food bank, and worked at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.  Otherwise, we hung out, went up the space needle, wandered around at a festival, checked out Pike's Place Market along the water, and rode in a big Ferris wheel.  Oh, and we ran into a Bernie Sanders rally.  No big deal.

You should all consider coming on this year's trip!  It will be a blast.

ShelterBox at the Home and Garden Show

Continuing an almost annual tradition, several Rotaractors helped out the Delta Rotary Club with raising awareness and funds at the Eugene H&G Show.  For three days, 1/20 - 1/22, there was a display including one of ShelterBox's well-known tents, a sample box and repair kit, and several informational signs.  We don't have final figures, but by partway through Saturday they had raised about half of the $10,000 goal.  The Show was gracious enough to match all donations up to that amount!
Our job was to engage with passersby, share information about the organization, and hopefully get a few dollars for the cause.

For those who are unfamiliar with ShelterBox, it is an organization that deploys throughout the world in response to disasters of any kind.  It was started in 2000 by a Rotary club in England, and has since become so large that it is now its own organization, though still with strong ties to Rotary.  ShelterBox helps people who have lost everything get their feet back on the ground and out of the elements.

A box costs $1000 to fill, ship, and deliver, and will support a medium-sized family.  In it are a tent, blankets, a stove, light sources, a water purifier, pots and pans, and other necessities adjusted for the nature and location of the disaster.  Thousands of boxes are sent out every year, and ShelterBox has had people on the ground at just about every disaster since about 2005.

We hope to host a similar event on campus this spring, to bring awareness to our student body.  Thanks to everyone who helped out!

For more information on ShelterBox, see the ShelterBox website.

We had a couple social events this term.  Our annual beach clean-up got rescheduled due to stormy weather, but we had a "Friendsgiving" graciously hosted by our Rotary advisor Tom and his wife Jan, as well as induction.

A week or so before Thanksgiving, 8 club members got together for food and fun at the Gilmour home.  It was a lot of fun, with talk ranging from football to the coast guard to club business, and the food was excellent!  There was also some foosball (Janika and Johnny were the world champions).  We hope to do it again next year.  Thanks again to the Gilmours!
Our fall induction this year saw 6 new members!  Everyone who could come gathered at Glenwood for dinner, socializing, and the ceremony, which included receipt of a certificate and a Rotaract pin.  It is great that so many could make it!

Dr. Ryan on Human Rights

11/16/2016

PictureEleanor Roosevelt and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
We had our first guest speaker of the year, Dr. Cheyney Ryan, on the importance of understanding and protecting human rights.  Dr. Ryan studied philosophy and law at Harvard University, and now teaches 1 term every year at UO, spending the rest of his time as the Human Rights Program Director at Oxford University.  He has worked on various issues, but focuses mostly on international conflict.

Dr. Ryan emphasized the importance of knowing about human rights and about the world we live in; while the US may be far away from many of today's conflicts, in today's globalized world, they affect us all, and we should be interested also as fellow human beings.  Rotary, among many other organizations worldwide, provides us with opportunities to enact changes and have real impact.

We are considering having an unofficial focus as a club on a certain issue, such as the treatment and conditions of refugees, or providing fresh water to places that need it.  This would simply mean that we would try to plan some of our projects with this focus in mind, not that we would decline any projects that did not fall within it.  There are many, many focuses we could choose!  If anyone has suggestions, feel free to comment here or contact the club.

Here are some sources to start learning about human rights: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948); a lecture on how the nature of war has changed by Mary Kaldor; UM's Human Rights Resource Center; and the book Inventing Human Rights, by Lynn Hunt.  There are of course many other places to learn more--just look for them!

"Human rights are for all of us, all the time: whoever we are and wherever we are from; no matter our class, our opinions, [or] our sexual orientation." – UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon

November Projects

Hi all!

The Connecting for Good Tour at the Boys and Girls Club went well, with a couple Rotaractors and probably 40 Rotarians from all over the district!  There was a lot of painting, some landscaping, and some organizing done.  We learned that the facility is donated all new supplies at the start of each year, and they pass them on at the end.  How they got so terribly disorganized in just a couple months is a mystery.

The place looks great!

The Craft Beer Festival filled up with volunteers pretty quickly, but a few of our members still managed to go, as well as some of our friends in Lane Community Rotaract (see their website here: lanecountyrotaract).  As a reminder, this festival was put on by the Springfield Rotary Club to fundraise for a small house, which will be designed by a local high school.

The club also helped out at the Hendricks Park a couple times, resurfacing a path and pulling ivy.  It's always very relaxing, up on the top of the hill.

Hey Rotaractors!

This year is off to a great start! We have quite a few new members and a lot of exciting events planned for this year.

We have already had two meetings this term. During our first meeting, the executive members introduced themselves and we talked about the types of service projects we typically do throughout the year. We also painted peace rocks and got to learn a little bit about all of our new members! During our second meeting, we talked about how to get involved in service projects outside of Rotaract through websites like the Holden Center and Duck Crops. We also talked about upcoming Rotaract events.

One of these events is the Connecting for Good Tour, which is stopping in Eugene on November 2nd at the Emerald Valley Boys and Girls club.  This tour consists of a bunch of Rotarians traveling along the west coast and stopping in different cities to talk about Rotary and take part in service projects. Another event coming up is the McKenzie Cider and Craft Beer Festival. This event is on November 4th and 5th and is a fundraiser for the Willamalane Foundation. The money raised will go toward the construction of homes for families in need.

Please email us or contact us on Facebook if you have any questions regarding either event! We will be updating you soon on other upcoming events.

Have a great week 5 and don’t forget to tell your friends about our club! We are always excited to see new faces!

    The Rotary Four-Way Test

Of all the things we think, say or do:
    1. Is it the truth?
    2. Is it fair to all concerned?
    3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
    4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
