Hello Everyone, The time is nearing for our annual spring break trip! This trip is a mix of community service, club member bonding time, and sightseeing. In the past, the spring break trip has taken us to places along the west coast such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle. This year we are considering Seattle again, or perhaps a fun historical town like Astoria, or some place along the Oregon coast. Please share ideas if you have them!

A box costs $1000 to fill, ship, and deliver, and will support a medium-sized family. In it are a tent, blankets, a stove, light sources, a water purifier, pots and pans, and other necessities adjusted for the nature and location of the disaster. Thousands of boxes are sent out every year, and ShelterBox has had people on the ground at just about every disaster since about 2005.
We hope to host a similar event on campus this spring, to bring awareness to our student body. Thanks to everyone who helped out! For more information on ShelterBox, see the ShelterBox website. We had a couple social events this term. Our annual beach clean-up got rescheduled due to stormy weather, but we had a "Friendsgiving" graciously hosted by our Rotary advisor Tom and his wife Jan, as well as induction.
Our fall induction this year saw 6 new members! Everyone who could come gathered at Glenwood for dinner, socializing, and the ceremony, which included receipt of a certificate and a Rotaract pin. It is great that so many could make it!
![]() We had our first guest speaker of the year, Dr. Cheyney Ryan, on the importance of understanding and protecting human rights. Dr. Ryan studied philosophy and law at Harvard University, and now teaches 1 term every year at UO, spending the rest of his time as the Human Rights Program Director at Oxford University. He has worked on various issues, but focuses mostly on international conflict. Dr. Ryan emphasized the importance of knowing about human rights and about the world we live in; while the US may be far away from many of today's conflicts, in today's globalized world, they affect us all, and we should be interested also as fellow human beings. Rotary, among many other organizations worldwide, provides us with opportunities to enact changes and have real impact. We are considering having an unofficial focus as a club on a certain issue, such as the treatment and conditions of refugees, or providing fresh water to places that need it. This would simply mean that we would try to plan some of our projects with this focus in mind, not that we would decline any projects that did not fall within it. There are many, many focuses we could choose! If anyone has suggestions, feel free to comment here or contact the club. Here are some sources to start learning about human rights: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948); a lecture on how the nature of war has changed by Mary Kaldor; UM's Human Rights Resource Center; and the book Inventing Human Rights, by Lynn Hunt. There are of course many other places to learn more--just look for them! "Human rights are for all of us, all the time: whoever we are and wherever we are from; no matter our class, our opinions, [or] our sexual orientation." – UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon
![]() Hey Rotaractors! This year is off to a great start! We have quite a few new members and a lot of exciting events planned for this year. We have already had two meetings this term. During our first meeting, the executive members introduced themselves and we talked about the types of service projects we typically do throughout the year. We also painted peace rocks and got to learn a little bit about all of our new members! During our second meeting, we talked about how to get involved in service projects outside of Rotaract through websites like the Holden Center and Duck Crops. We also talked about upcoming Rotaract events. ![]() One of these events is the Connecting for Good Tour, which is stopping in Eugene on November 2nd at the Emerald Valley Boys and Girls club. This tour consists of a bunch of Rotarians traveling along the west coast and stopping in different cities to talk about Rotary and take part in service projects. Another event coming up is the McKenzie Cider and Craft Beer Festival. This event is on November 4th and 5th and is a fundraiser for the Willamalane Foundation. The money raised will go toward the construction of homes for families in need. Please email us or contact us on Facebook if you have any questions regarding either event! We will be updating you soon on other upcoming events. Have a great week 5 and don’t forget to tell your friends about our club! We are always excited to see new faces! |
